Mental Health Center

Objectives : The purposes
of this study were to examine the abnormal psychosocial situations
in children and adolescents attending the Child Mental Health Center
with regard to 1) the frequency of each abnormal situation; 2) the
relationship between psychosocial situations and age and intelligence;
and 3) the relationship between psychosocial situations and each
symptom cluster.
Method : Each new patient's
parent was interviewed using the parent interview schedule of the
new version of Axis V abnormal psychosocial situations according
to the ICD-10 multiaxial diagnosis. The patient's symptoms were
collected by the new-patient recording form of the Child Mental
Health Center.
Results : Mean age of
the 365 subjects was 9.37 years. Common abnormal psychosocial situations
were overprotection (28%), anomalous parenting situation (22.5%),
and overexpectation (22%). Among adolescent subjects significant
abnormal psychosocial situations were abnormal intrafamilial relationship,
parents' disability, abnormal upbringing, and acute life events
respectively; whereas abnormal upbringing was the crucial factor
among 6-12 year old subjects. Compared to other subjects in the
study, children with low IQ had significantly more abnormal intrafamilial
relationship and abnormal upbringing. There were significant correlations
between emotional, social, and academic problems and several abnormal
psychosocial situations.
Conclusions : Among
our subjects, the abnormal psychosocial situations significantly
correlated with age, intelligence, and emotional, social, and academic
problems.
