Extended
Suicide in the Family
Benjaporn Panyayong,
M.D. *
This is a retrospective
cross-sectional study of data on suicide from newspaper reports
of the Matichon Information Center in order to examine characteristics
of extended suicide in the family in Thailand. During 1990-97, there
were 47 families committed extended suicides making a total of 110
subjects. The events occurred most common in the central region
and least common in the eastern region. The suicide rates in adults
peaked between ages 20 and 39. Seventeen per cent of cases were
infanticide. The two most common patterns were mother-child suicide
and father-mother-child suicide, respectively. The most common method
in men was shooting whereas women preferred drug overdose. There
were psychiatric problems among some family members. The most common
precipitating factors were economic problems and family problems,
respectively.
