| Comparison of the Efficacy between Risperidone and Classical Antipsychotics: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials in Schizophrenic Patients
The efficacy of antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia has been an issue of interest. In the present meta-analysis, the efficacy of risperidone was compared with that of classical antipsychotics. By the CD-ROM edition of Medline computerized search, 8 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The dosage of risperidone was separated into 4 dose ranges. The PANSS positive, negative, general-psychopathology, and total scores in each dose range were analyzed. From the effect size (d) of each comparison, the weighted mean d (dw) of each dose range of risperidone were presented. The total of 2159 patients with schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder were included in the present analysis.The results show that, in the dosage of 1-2 mg/day of risperidone, the weighted mean effect size (dw) on PANSS positive scores is lower than -0.20. For the dosage of 4-6 mg/day of risperidone, the weighted effect sizes (dws) on PANSS negative, general-psychopathology, and total scores are equal to or higher than 0.20. In conclusion, the efficacy of risperidone in the dosage of 1-2 mg/day is likely to be lower than that of classical antipsychotics in regard to the improvement on positive symptoms. However, risperidone in the dosage of 4-6 mg/day is probably more effective than classical antipsychotics, especially on the improvement of negative and general-psychopathology symptoms. Further studies are still needed to support the provisional results of this present analysis. |
